How To Disassemble New Nokia E71 & Replace Faceplate

Want to change how your Nokia E71 looks? Why not try a different colored keypad or faceplate? Here are photos and instructions which show you how you can do it yourself. Even though it’s simple, I have to warn you to only try this if you are prepared to risk ending up with a broken phone.

For the extra faceplates and spare parts, many people seem to like CNN.CN. They include the Nokia E71’s faceplate, bottom cover and even a whole body replacement. The instructions below will show you how to remove just the faceplate and bottom cover.

I purposely omit the instructions that will enable you disassemble the phone further because the photos just look plain scary.

Best Ways to Use Twitter With Nokia Phones 2009

If you’re one of the millions of people using Twitter, I’ll tell you the best ways to use it with your recent Nokia or S60 phone. I’ll show you what applications to use and how you can show location, videos, and pictures with your tweets.

Twitter Nokia e71

Application For Twitter

A common question I see is what application to install to use Twitter on their S60 Nokia phones. The answer is twibble. You can even use your phone’s GPS for twibble to include your location with your tweets. You can supposedly insert photos thru twibble, but I got errors trying. I’ll tell you more about tweeting with photos so keep reading. Download twibble mobile.

Using the S60 Browser For Twitter

If you do not like Twibble, a better way to send tweets is accessing m.slandr.net through the browser. Update: I now prefer to use dabr.co.uk because it seems to have more options and looks prettier. You can send tweets, view replies, and check direct messages here as well. This is for you if you don’t want to bother installing anything on your phone. Alternatively, you can use m.twitter.com to keep it simple and don’t need to see replies nor direct messages.

How to Add Photos with Tweets

Add twitpic as an upload site in Shozu. Take a photo, add a title for the picture, then send it to twitpic using Shozu. Here’s a sample tweet with a photo inserted through Shozu.

How to Add Videos with Tweets

Another cool way to use Twitter with your Nokia phone is by adding live video streams. You can read about it on my previous post

Your Thoughts

So there you have it… the best ways to use Twitter with your Nokia phones. Are you a Twitter user? Let me know in the comments below which methods above you have already been using and/or have not known about. Also consider following me on twitter.

Update Original Nokia N73 Firmware to Music Edition

If you already own the Nokia N73, you can update the firmware to the Music Edition by using the Nokia Software Update with a little trick. Retailers are just receiving the Nokia N73 Music Edition as this how-to is published, but you do not have to buy the new Nokia N73 Music Edition to take advantage of the new features. Read on to find out how to update the firmware.

Before you decide to update your Nokia N73 to the Music Edition, know that this may void your warranty and you run the risk of breaking your phone, like Darla. Is it worth taking the risk? Find out first what to expect in the new Nokia N73 Music Edition (screenshots by mukushu):

Nokia N73 Music Edition Screenshot
1. Idle Screen with new clock.
2. New Main Menu Music Icon.

3. New Default Themes.
4. New Music Player with Album Art.

6. Music Player Visualization - Oscilloscope

7. Music Player Visualization - Spectrum
8. Firmware Version: 3.0638.0.0.30

Now that you’ve seen how the Nokia N73 Music Edition differs from the standard Nokia N73, do you still want to do it? If so, this is how to update the firmware:

Download and install: Nemesis Service Suite and the latest Nokia Software Update.

  1. Connect your phone and wait for Windows to install the drivers.
  2. Open Nemesis Service Suite and click “Scan for new device” on the right-upper part of the window
  3. Click on the icon “Phone info”
  4. Click on “Scan”
  5. Change the product code to 0539343 and mark the case “Enable”.
  6. Press “Write”, and your phone’s product code will be changed (you might think that nothing happened, because the phone is still in normal mode, and the changing of the product code only takes a couple of seconds, but don’t worry, the product code changed !).
  7. Close Nemesis Service Suite and run the Nokia Software Update.
  8. Make sure not to touch the cable or the phone while your phone is updating or else you will break it!
  9. That’s it! When you restart your phone, it should now be the Nokia N73 Music Edition!

You may also want to change for black Nokia N73 faceplate housing to black to make it look more like the real Nokia N73 Music Edition. You can read more about how to change the Nokia N73 faceplate here.

Get Certificate To Sign and Install Unsigned S60 Apps

If you find files you want to install on your Nokia phone with the word “unsigned,” then you might want to read this. Here are sets of instructions to get a developer’s certificate to sign the unsigned apps and install on your Nokia S60 phone.

1. Register an account at OPDA. It’s in Chinese, but check the photo below to make it easier for you.
Register
2. Apply for certificate here.
Imei
3. Enter your IMEI in the first form. You can get this by entering *#06# into your phone.
4. On the second box, enter last 9 numbers of your mobile number and place 13, 15 or 18 before them. EXAMPLE: If your phone number is +44 20 12345678, then you type 18012345678.
5. Press the submit button.
6. After a few hours, check the My Certificates section for the cer and key files. You will need both to sign your apps.
Cer and key
7. Use SignSIS to sign the unsigned app using the Certificate and key files you just downloaded. You don’t need to enter anything for the key box.
Signsis
8. That’s it! Your app is now signed and can be installed. From now on, you only need to do step 7 when you find more unsigned apps.

How About You?

Is this how you sign your apps? Know a better method?

New Nokia N85 Review - Part 1 The Physical

I’ve been using the Nokia N85 for 3 weeks now and let me tell you that this is the best phone to have right now. It has become my replacement for my previous favorite, the Nokia N95 8GB. The Nokia N96 was supposed to take this title, but that phone has been collecting dust on my desk because of the N85. In this first part of the review, I’ll cover the physical aspects.

Nokia N85
Black + shiny = excellent gadget formula

Build Quality

When it comes to slider phones, people really want to know about the quality of the slider. The Nokia N85’s slider can be best described as ‘tight.’ You can feel the spring pulling the front up by the time you are halfway up. The quality of the slider is not an issue with the Nokia N85.

As for the rest of the phone, it feels like the materials used were pretty good. I don’t hear any creaking, rattling, or notice any loose parts when handling the N85.

Pocketable

The Nokia N85’s size is very pocketable. It’s thinner and narrower than the Nokia N95 8GB. It’s narrower than the Nokia N96 by a little bit, but the Nokia N85 feels much better to hold in the hands and more comfortable inside a jeans pocket. Let’s look at a size comparison below.

Nokia N85 vs Nokia N96 size
Nokia N85 next to Nokia N96

Display

The front of the Nokia N85 is flat and glossy showing a lot of reflection when the display is off. When it is on, we see a bright 2.6 inch display with the resolution of 240×320. What’s unique with the Nokia N85 is that it is the first Nseries phone with an OLED display. The improvement in brightness, sharpness, and color accuracy is very visible over the older backlit . You really have to see it in person than rely on images online.

People also interested in the Nokia N96 have to decide whether to go for the bigger display on the Nokia N96 or go for the much better quality display on the Nokia N85.

Buttons

The front buttons are where the Nokia N85 gets tricky. I initially had a hard time. There are 12 functional buttons on the front, but 4 of those buttons are flushed with the surface and have no physical separation. They were tough to press, requiring more effort than necessary. After a few days, I have gotten used to the buttons and found the “sweet spots” to press.

Number keypad. The numeric keypad is flat, but in between each row of numbers are thin strips that goes slightly deeper than the main surface, creating a noticeable separation for our fingers.

keypad separation
Flat surface with button separation

Side. On the right side of the Nokia N85 are the volume controls, keyguard, and camera button. I’m right-handed so the keyguard placed on the right side is very convenient for me. When I’m done using the phone and want to avoid accidental button press, I just flick the keyguard with my right thumb.

right side
The right side of the Nokia N85

Speakers

Built for videos. Both the left and right speakers are placed on the right side of the Nokia N85. The placement is perfect for watching movies on the phone, but gets covered when holding the phone with the right hand during a loudspeaker call. Nevertheless, the speakers are loud and gave me no problems hearing my callers.

Connection Ports

Micro-USB with Charging. The Nokia N85 connects to your computer via wire with a micro-USB cable. What’s really great is that the phone will get charged while connected. Previous Nokia owners will need to purchase a different charger to use in the car.

Standard 3.5mm jack. A 3.5mm jack is on top of the Nokia N85. This should be a standard placement on all phones because it is a lot easier to listen to music while the device is in my pocket. That same jack also connects to the TV-out cable where you can connect the Nokia N85 to a TV. This is great to show off to your friends and family the DVD-quality video recorded on the phone on a bigger screen. That’s 640×480 resolution in 30 frames per second!

MicroSD and MicroSDHC. The Nokia N85 takes microSD and microSDHC cards on the left side. What I like about the placement is that I do not need to do anything else other than insert or remove the card from the side with the flap cover. The retail package comes with an 8GB card included.

Camera

Lens Cover. The 5 megapixel camera on the Nokia N85 is protected by a lens cover. The cover slides up and down flawlessly. I don’t want to talk about the camera functions and the way it works yet because that will be in the second part of the review.

camera open
Nokia N85’s camera lens cover

Dual LEDs Flash. The Nokia N85 features dual LEDs for camera flash. It’s not as bright as the xenon flash on the Nokia N82. Take a look at a comparison I’ve done between the Nokia N95 8gb, N82, N85, and N96.

  • Nokia N82 vs Nokia N85 vs Nokia N95 8GB vs Nokia N96 Camera Flash Test in Darkness

An advantage with using the LEDs, is that you can use it as a continuous light source when creating videos in poor light conditions. Take a look at a sample Nokia N85 video with the LEDs on.

  • Vlog: Nokia N85 at Chocolate Restaurant Max Brenner

Physical Conclusion

I really like the Nokia N85 and it is my current favorite phone. Black and shiny seem to be a popular formula. Most buyers will be looking at either the Nokia N85 or the Nokia N96 as an upgrade from the Nokia N95. After seeing the display on the Nokia N85 in person, you will not want any other device without an OLED screen. The Nokia N85 feels good to hold and is very pocketable. It’s really a great mobile device that packs a lot of features.

The second part of this review will be my thoughts on the Nokia N85’s functions, features, as well as usage experience. Stay tuned or subscribe to the Nokia blog’s feed.

Nokia N97 For North America Arriving June 2nd 2009

I told you a couple days ago the Nokia N97 NAM was coming soon, but I wasn’t sure of the exact date. Well, Nokia just notified one of their major North American distributors of the estimated shipping date: June 2nd, 2009! How accurate are we? We were spot-on with the Nokia 5800 NAM’s release date! I’m not sure what this means for the release date in other parts of the world.

Nokia n97 June 2nd

Like I mentioned previously, you can expect many of the U.S. retailers to sell the Nokia N97 NAM for around $600 even if the suggested price is $699. I’m hoping those who pre-ordered the Nokia N97 already will get theirs right away. As you may recall, customers who pre-ordered the Nokia 5800 NAM from nokiausa.com did not get theirs until a month after the other retailers like Amazon and Dell. Update: The Nokia N97 pre-order at Amazon is now $604.

Nokia's Closest Market Segmenation Ever

I've read a lot of articles from Nokia about their plan to create segmentation in the mobile phone market as part of their strategy but I didn't thought it would be as close as E55 and E52 that has identical features and design except for the keypad were E55 had a QWERTY while E52 has the traditional T9 pad. Segmentation was drawn down only to individual consumers preference to which keypad suited them best, another first from the worlds leader in mobile phone. This is a good move by Nokia since consumers had varied taste and the idea of giving them what they like and what they want would mean higher sales and more solid support that would insure the companies top spot in the next few years. Its the notion of being heard and understood that matters to many and Nokia just showed this.

E55 was introduce at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona early this year while the E52 was announced few days ago booth gunning a unique and attractive design that gained attention among the designed conscious business consumers. I personally love the design to, how I wish my N82 Black was created the same way, it would have been perfect.

Both phone have an S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2 Operating System, same Weight and Dimension, same Screen Size of 2.4 inches supporting 16 million Color Resolution, same CPU, ARM 11 600 MHz processor, same feature such as Digital Compass, Document Viewer, Noise Calcelation capability, Voice Memo and Battery Span which was said to last up to a stagering 672 hours on 2G while up to 432 hours on 3G.

We would diffinitely see more of this strategy from Nokia in their future devices or even closer to this type of segmentation which is a good thing as it will bring mobile phones closer to everyones ideal preference, our choice.

Nokia Strikes A Definite Win: Nokia N97's Price Lowered!

Remember my "Bitter" article few days ago about N97's price, I believe it have brought a major shake up in Nokia's camp and decided to finally reduce the price tag of their upcoming flagship device, just kidding c",. The device is now price at 499 Euro in online mobile shops like Play.com and $699 in Nokia's very own shops together with flash Pre Order netters appearing in Nokia Websites serving countries like US, Spain, Italy, Germany and Sweden. It was originaly price at 540 Euro when the phone was announced last September 2008 but then Telecom Italia Mobile (TIM) marked the phone with 599 Euro few days ago that freaks everyone out.
This is a big game changer on my part since I can now finalize my next phone upgrade zeroing on N97 white version (since I have N82 black at the moment, so it will be a black and white team up) alone and nothing else. You might have notice the heartbreak I have when early reports came in about N97's high tagged price, that's because I want the device so badly and putting a higher price stake on it destroys that dream and so are the millions of Nokia N97 fans all over the world. I would describe it as a burst of criticism pouring into Nokia's world that time from all fronts, Nokia stout supporters or not and that may have send a strong signal for them to finalize the price point to the minimum. I even send Twitter post to Nokia Conversations several times asking them to reconsider the price. Well, everything paid of and now I can own the device with no apprehension.

A new superstar will grace this blog by July and expect more and more N97 topics by then together with the omnipotent N82. Happy days are coming! c",

Nokia E75's Bewitching Foray

I'm beginning to like E75, the best ESeries device that grace Nokia portfolio to date and now seriously considering it in par with N97 and N86 8MP as my next phone to own and as the matter of fact, it ranks 2nd to my choices with N97 on the top and N86 8MP in the bottom at the moment.

Pretty weird here since I like photography and video (the phone has 3.2MP Carl Ziess only and a 15 frames per minute video capability) and all NSeries perks being a tech savvy person but things changed and perception curved and that's whats currently playing in my field right now. The main reason for this is that, I'm not giving up my N82 just yet at the moment since I couldn't find a good replacement of this phone leaving a goal to find a phone that will serve only as an alternate so I will not get bored with it.

The phone must offer something different, could either be in User Interface (UI), Form Factor or Features and best of all it must be Affordable and E75 just fits to the description. The phone has a QWERTY, keyboard that I have been wanting ever since the E71 was introduce being a heavy texter myself, plus the fact that it is a side slider, form factor than I have been craving also in contrast to N82's candybar. UI, the phone has an S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2 which of course offer new experience while Feature wise, it has a Quick Office editing feature as well as other Email and connectivity feature way different to N82. The phone is also compatible with SU-33W, Nokia's Mobile TV Receiver accessory which would mean a possibility of unlimited TV viewing and entertainment anytime, anywhere, on the go. I have always been wanting to own a mobile TV device ever since the N92 days being a TV freak myself and this is a realization of that desire, thought this accessory will be brought separately but I don't care, as long as I have TV entertainment anytime I wanted to. This phone is also compatible with N-Gage games therefore I could play my Reset Generation. A total entertainment package phone.

Affordability, E75 was introduce to the market at Php22,800 only which was almost the same price when I bought my N82 8 months after its initial release, imagine how affordable it was and how much it will cost 1-2 months after the initial excitement traction died down, I predict it will be within Php18,000 marked. Even the E71 cost Php27,000 when it first came out so this is an awesome price point, more likely within everyone's reached.

I'll still be counting few more weeks before getting an alternate phone, I'm waiting for my credit card installment contract to end before jumping to another one, as of the moment, this phone gets all the jets, bewitching foray.

Nokia 5800 XPressMusic

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic
Nokia 5800 XpressMusic Nokia XpressMusic 5800 Side View Nokia XpressMusic 5800 Stylus

Although Nokia's 5800 XpressMusic hasn't yet hit the PC Magazine Labs for full testing, I was able to spend a little time tinkering with the device. The time I had with it left me asking one big question: "Why, Nokia, why?" Casting aside some of its greatest strengths in favor of a trendy touch screen, the 5800 XPressMusic comes off as a buggy iPhone imitation, rather than a triumph from the world's number-one cell-phone maker. And that's a pity, because Nokia's "Comes With Music" program, which offers a year's worth of free music downloads for your 5800, could truly rock the mobile world.
